Water is usually pretty important when we’re looking at performance. In sports, at least, athletes are supposed to stay hydrated. How about public speaking?

Chris de Diego: Water is the most important part of your diet, whether you give speeches or not. There are many reasons to keep a water bottle around. 

First of all, it gives you a chance to pause during your speech, which helps pace it out and lets the audience digest what you say. Secondly, it prevents dry mouth and dehydration, which I’m sure you know would make the speech much more difficult to deliver. 

I recommend room temperature water since it’s easier on the vocal cords and just naturally goes down smoother. 

How about food-food? What’s something solid you enjoy eating before a speech? 

Chris de Diego: Usually, I’ll eat a light snack. Cashews, almonds, and any kind of nut are really good. They are full of fat, which keeps you full longer and actually increases your brainpower. 

Cashews actually help your brain produce serotonin, which is a vital chemical when it comes to presentations and public speaking. You obviously don’t want to be so full that you’re sluggish, but you also don’t want your stomach rumbling and cramping during your speech, so nuts are the perfect snack.

How about beyond snacks? What if you have to grab dinner before your speech? What would you recommend? 

Chris de Diego: If I need to eat a full meal before a speech or presentation, say with a client, or just because I haven’t eaten all day, I’ll eat something pretty light. Most of the time, I’ll have salad and salmon.

Trust me; you’re never going to get a stomach ache from eating a nice, healthy piece of salmon. I go light on the dressing with my salad as well, you don’t want your mouth feeling sticky or your stomach feeling like it’s going to pop.

Can you talk more about drinks? Is there anything you recommend that’s not water? Or anything you don’t recommend?

Chris de Diego: Let’s see, if you’re not into water, then Gatorade would be the next best thing, especially if you can get a low-sugar version. Other than that, I’d avoid things that will leave your mouth and throat sticky. Things like orange juice and soda. 

Alcohol too, is a big nono, at least until your speech is over. I also avoid over-caffeination. Nothing is worse than being jittery on stage. 

How about foods to avoid?

Chris de Diego: Well, my rule of thumb is, if you haven’t eaten it, don’t eat it before a presentation. You never know how your body will react. This is a good rule when you travel a lot, and there are a lot of local goodies to try out. 

Other than that, I just try to keep it healthy; avoid burgers, pizza, and fries.

Let Work be Work

This advice can be applied to every single industry. You need to keep the work at the office; otherwise, you will burn out. This means you need to give yourself days off and have hobbies that are as far from work as possible. 

As a trader, you will be spending a lot of time on the computer doing research and looking at numbers, so Roger Scott recommends finding a hobby that takes you away from the computer. Board games, hiking, exercise, something that stimulates you while taking you away from stocks for a little bit, is exactly what your brain needs. 

Take a Break

Small breaks are great, but everybody needs to have some long breaks as well. Taking a long break, whether it be for a few days or a few weeks, is a great way to give your brain some time to process everything you’ve practiced and learned. 

Roger Scott says some of his biggest breakthroughs as a trader happened while he wasn’t actually at work or studying. They happened as he was away on vacation when his brain could relax and let all of the information he had processed simmer.

Can you quickly tell us why morning routines are necessary?

How do you rise early and shine in a morning routine?

Jurgen Cautreels: I don’t need to do too much to get up early in the morning. The most important thing is to make sure you plan ahead. 

The second is to resist the urge to snooze your alarm when it rings. Even if you’re still feeling sleepy, get up and drink your morning cup of water. 

It would help if you did not start planning your day after waking up. That’s for the night before. You should avoid making unimportant decisions and remember to spruce up your routine now and then to prevent monotony.

How do you supercharge your morning?

Jurgen: While coffee seems like the obvious answer, it’s not. Of course, I drink coffee, but I don’t depend on it to kick-start my day. 

I’ve discovered that a cup of water and 30 minutes of exercise has the same jolting effect as caffeine. I also like to keep up with trends, whether in business or tech, by reading articles and news online. 

Some of the people I’ve talked to in the past have different ways of supercharging their mornings. Some start by listening to music. For others, jogging seems to work, and some rare people find eating something they love a great way to supercharge their mornings.

How do smart people start their morning?

Jurgen: As I’ve mentioned before, they start by drinking water. I drink mine plain and warm, but some prefer to add a dash of lime or honey. 

After this, they move around as a way to loosen their body and get rid of that lethargy from sleep. This can be done by exercising or running. 

After this, some immerse themselves in sensational experiences. While most people choose to meditate, listening to podcasts on stock analysis can have the same effect on others.

How long have you had a morning routine?

Jurgen: I’ve been using morning routines for more than eight years now, and at this point, it’s now what I call a success habit. That contributed a lot to achieving success in my life and career. I’ve noticed that my productivity has reduced, and I’m not the same man I was back then.

How do you measure your business success?

For most people, business success is measured in profit. For me, it’s a lot more than that.

Whenever I have a task to complete, I do my best to influence all these factors to work perfectly. So far, it has worked for me. As a business executive, I can’t be giving excuses; I have to make things work. 

Do you think a person’s diet affects their business performance?

Joe Jedlowski: Yes, definitely. Initially, I did not take my diet seriously at all until I got advice from a professional. Since then, I have carefully managed my diet to keep me performing optimally.

From your personal experience as an executive, has your diet ever affected your business performance?

Joe Jedlowski: There was a time when I used to take high-fat meals daily for lunch. Those times, I always saw a decline in my productivity after the lunch break. Since I started being more intentional about planning my diet right, I haven’t experienced that. 

Now, I’m able to stay more active through my working hours and get more stuff done. Honestly, the difference is not always so noticeable. When I consider how I work now against before, I know there has been a change.

What diet would you recommend to a person looking to improve his business performance?

Joe Jedlowski: You should see a professional, but here is a general guide I frequently share. As a basic rule, you should never skip breakfast. It would help if you got your brain ready for the day by eating in the morning. 

Also, if you are like the old me and you snack on high-fat meals at lunch break every day, you need to stop. Get some healthy snacks to chew on before lunch break to sustain your energy.
