3 Tips For Trying New Foods For The Risk Averse

If you want to try new things but always seem to find yourself nervous about the idea of something not going well, your own risk aversion might be standing in the way of you actually experiencing new things, especially when it comes to food. So for those who might be picky eaters or who just might be apprehensive about trying new foods that you aren’t familiar with, here are three tips for trying new foods for the risk averse. 

Try One New Thing At A Time

One easy way to get yourself more comfortable with trying new foods is to incorporate them into foods that you already know that you enjoy. 

To do this, try swapping out one ingredient in the recipe for the new ingredient that you’re wanting to try. By doing this, you can still have a sense of the familiar while also allowing yourself to try something new in a less intimidating way. And, if it turns out that you don’t like this food in the recipe, you can hopefully just eat around it to still enjoy the food that you know you like. 

As you get used to this new food in a recipe that you like, you can then try this food in other recipes or look at new ways that you can put new foods into this same recipe so that you can keep trying new things. 

Make It A Fun Experience

If you’re ready to jump in a little more when trying a new food, something that can make the experience less uncomfortable for you is to make a whole event out of trying this new food. By adding a dash of fun to this experience, you can become much more light-hearted about something that intimidates you. 

Depending on the type of food that you’re wanting to try, one option could be to get a bunch of different versions of that food and try a lot of different ones at the same time. You can look for things like sampler kits that make it easy to try little variations on the same type of food. This can help you determine what you like and what you don’t. 

Give Safe Foods A Change-Up

For those who are really hesitant about trying new foods, you could dip your toes into the water by first trying to make some subtle changes to the food that you are comfortable with. For example, if you only like a certain vegetable, try cooking it in a different way. Once you’re able to break out of this one way of doing things, it can become much easier to stray from this path even more in the future.
