With so many different spices, substances, supplements and energy gainers on the market now, it’s hard to tell what is healthy and building to the body, and what is harmful. And in most cases, without the FDA having a standpoint on the subject, it can be hard to say. Today we’re going to be looking at Kratom. What is Kratom? Where did it come from? What are its uses? And is it safe for me to use? Hopefully by the time we’re done here, you’ll have a better understanding and be able to know if Kratom is right for you.
Kratom is a leaf indigenous to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea. It has a long history in medicine and was used in these lands as a healing herb for a while. Back then it had different applications and uses than it does today. It would either be chewed or brewed. Most commonly it was used in Teas and drinks. Now, it’s usually ground down into a powder and put in capsules to be taken as a pill. When taken in small doses, it acts as an accelerant and can be compared to Caffeine, found in soft drinks and energy drinks. However, Caffeine is also found in pills where the dosage is higher. Kratom therefore is more applicable to the effect that you would have ingesting a Caffeine pill rather than drinking one of your favorite beverages.
This being said, high increments and dosages of Kratom will act as a depressant rather than an accelerate and slow down bodily functions rather than speed them up. That’s why Kratom is used in different scenarios and can be found on both sides of the spectrum. So now the question is, is the drug safe? The FDA was close to banning the drug upon its arrival in the US but realized that they simply don’t have enough information on it and decided to leave Kratom for sale open to the public and have health care professionals study the supplement and its effects. They have not yet made a decision on its uses and it remains legal in the United States.
Although it does have some side effects, such as itching, nausea, dry mouth, and dizziness, these are only found at high doses. Regular users of Kratom have said that they experienced some of these when they stopped using Kratom as well. However, because of it’s accelerative state, it can be a good substitute for Caffeine.
It will have the same effect on the body and is usually used as a pre-workout or a late-night supplement in order to keep the body awake. If you’re looking for a supplement for either of these scenarios, it might be worth giving Kratom a try. It’s relatively inexpensive and has been known to give high amounts of energy organically.
